I finally got the distinction between the essence and energies of God, my inner experience and knowing of God’s love (God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us, Romans5:5) is not a knowing of the essence of God. In my experience the Father gladly fellowships with us inwardly like the father of the prodigal son, I don’t think he is as fussy about our success at purity as a condition for knowing Him in the Spirit as I see in some spiritual teachings. A bit of humility and repentance and simple turning to him goes a long way! his gift of love then pulls and frees us to grow in obedience. “ We love because he first loves us”

And in the vein of essence/energy distinction, I found the sun-disc / sun-rays analogy very helpful. We can never reach the sun (the divine essence) -- and even if we could, we'd burn up. But all it takes to be in the sun -- truly in it, and one with it -- is to turn our faces in its direction. Just a little bit. The rays of the sun are the sun; and they are for us, and they give us life. And we ARE them, by eating the sun-eating plants...
